Education
Universities in Germany
What this entry covers
Germany is a common choice for students who want a degree from a public university without high tuition fees. The Germany section of Universities DB lists universities with their locations and programme information, and the site's guide to tuition-free and low-cost universities in Europe compares Germany with other options.
Fees
Public universities in most German states charge no tuition for a first degree. Students pay a semester contribution each term, which covers administration and student services and in many cities includes a public transport ticket. Baden-Württemberg is the main exception: it charges tuition to most students from outside the EU. Private universities set their own fees.
Types of institution
Universities (Universitäten) focus on research and theory. Universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen or Hochschulen für angewandte Wissenschaften) focus on practical and professional subjects, often with work placements. Both award bachelor's and master's degrees.
Language
Most bachelor's programmes are taught in German. English-taught programmes are much more common at master's level. Check the language requirement for the exact programme, not the university as a whole.
Editor's notes
- Students enrolled at a state or state-recognised university are generally covered by statutory health insurance until the semester in which they turn 30. Older students usually need private cover.
- Some applications go through the uni-assist service, others go directly to the university. The programme page says which.
